WOYZECK (2021)

Role: Dramaturg

by Georg Büchner, adapted by Daniel Kramer, directed by Jake Musgrove

As one of the most influential and performed plays in German history, Woyzeck, based on the real-life Johann Christian Woyzeck who was beheaded in Leipzig in 1824,  has stood the test of time due to its universal themes of loss and isolation. Woyzeck has become a weak and mad man because of mistreatment by his doctor, military captain, and community. His weakness and madness are only heightened by his poverty, and all is lost when he murders his common-law wife, Marie, for cheating. Through gender-bent casting and re-centering the plot onto Marie, our production challenged conceptions of toxic masculinity and gendered rage. With our production, we hoped to leave the audience stunned, shocked, and left with the question, “how easy is it for one to slip into madness?”

Each of the three parts feature a different performer, as they detail their own experiences during the pandemic. The sublime is explored in both negative and positive lights, and the deep, personal nature of this film brings the audience back to their own lives in quarantine.

CHANEL: A FRANK OCEAN EXPERIENCE (2019)

Role: Writer and Dramaturg

music and lyrics by Frank Ocean, book by Elle Norman, directed by Moses Garcia

chanel is a play with music and an exploration of queer womanhood set in present day Los Angeles. Utilizing the discography of Frank Ocean (a famously bisexual artist), chanel sheds light on what it’s like to be bisexual in the 21st century. Instead of a woman’s bisexuality being a prop for a man’s journey towards open mindedness, this is a story about a girl still in the process of discovering the fluidity of her sexuality. chanel is a coming of age story that reveals how self-exploration can complicate relationships and self image.

THE DANCE FLOOR, THE HOSPITAL ROOM, AND THE KITCHEN TABLE (2019)

Role: Assistant Dramaturg

written and directed by Lyam B. Gabel

What does solidarity look like in this moment? What can we learn from those who lived through another moment of great pain and instability about how to care for one another in this time? Slipping between the present and the past the theater is transformed into intimate places-- a disco dance floor, a hospital room, and a kitchen table. One queer family navigates these spaces and their relationships to each other, becoming, interacting with, and learning from a chorus of voices from a critical moment in the queer liberation movement. From lesbians stepping in to deal with the state-sponsored genocide of gay men by AIDS to a celebration of all-night dance partners the dance floor, the hospital room and the kitchen table interrogates what unites and divides us as members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and posits a utopian topography in the spaces between us.

Created with 22 long form oral history interviews and archival research.
